Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
  • Strong Fan Base: CSK boasts one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in the IPL, which significantly boosts their brand value and attracts better team sponsorships.
  • Consistent Team Performance: They have won the IPL title 5 times (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023), and competed in 5 more finals. They are able to boost their revenues by getting a higher share of the prize money.
  • Talent Nurturing: CSK has been opening academies for young cricketers which will aid in spotting talent, helping reduce the wage burden of the team.
  • Strength of IPL brand: IPL as a brand has strengthened with broadcasting rights growing from Rs. 3,300 Cr p.a. from 2018-2022 to Rs. 9,678 Cr p.a. from 2023 to 2027. As per the revenue sharing model with the BCCI, each team is likely to receive a windfall of Rs. 280-300 Cr additional revenue without an associated cost.
  • Expansion to different leagues: CSK has also established teams in the T20 league of South Africa (Joburg Super Kings) and in the US Major League Cricket (Texas Super Kings). This will help CSK create brand loyalty for the Indian franchisee as well as generate revenue from other franchisees.
Weaknesses
  • Retirement of MS Dhoni: MS Dhoni has been the biggest ambassador of CSK and his impending retirement can impact the brand loyalty of the franchisee.
  • Dependence on BCCI: Changes in league policies or regulations by the BCCI can impact revenue structures and operational strategies.
